The tail is an important body part that is used by the dog to communicate with humans and with other animals, a kind of blanket that keeps dogs that sleep outdoors warm when the weather is cold. Of course a well feathered tail or even a saber shaped tail that curls atop the dog's body enhances the dog's appeal. How then would stumpy tailed dogs fare?
Tail docking was a custom that goes back centuries ago in Great Britain. By docking the tail of the dog, a farmer or a drover is exempted from paying taxes imposed on keeping the animal. Although the custom was stopped in 1796, dog owners continued to shorten the tails of their pets. Docking is done to conform with the breed standard. There are dog breeds with naturally short tails. Such is the case of the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog.
Careful breeding has result to a short tailed dog given the name Australian Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog. There are other herding dogs in Australia but this short tailed breed is believed to be the oldest. An Australian Stumpy Tailed Dog was developed from the mating of a Dingo and a short tailed dog. To maintain the short-tailed characteristics, long tailed dogs were eliminated from the breeding program and only short tailed dogs were mated.
These dogs are highly valued by ranchers and drovers because they are excellent and dependable herders. An Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog has all attributes of an outstanding herder. These are hardworking dogs but the intelligence and the shrewdness are important assets in the performance of their work. Being a herder, the dog would need to control unruly cattle and these abilities would be very necessary. An Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog was originally utilized to herd. These dogs would be seen keeping the cattle in line even under the heat of the sun.
These dogs would rather be out in the pasture with the cattle but some specimens have adapted to being home companions. Unlike other pets, these dogs would not really need cuddling and hugging as these are independent dogs. Appreciative words from the human family would be enough to make these dogs happy. Owners of these dogs have to make sure that the pet is provided with activities to while away time to prevent the development of destructive habits. Enough space to run and lots of activities will make this energetic dog happy. The owner of this breed has to have the ability to handle the dog otherwise it will be a hard to manage pet that has the tendency to herd the family.
